Before getting into how to prevent this issue, the causes need to be addressed. Vulnerability factors can make an individual more likely to be targeted by a trafficker. This includes neglect, homelessness, and poverty. The reason children are commonly targeted is because of their emotional and economic dependence on others paired with their high “market value” among buyers. These traffickers will seek to capitalize on this market by manipulating and luring victims. This is often done with the traffickers building a relationship with a victim in efforts to understand their desires and weaknesses. Then, they use this information and trust to manipulate the victim and isolate them from their family through force or intimidation in order to gain control of the victim. The process is one that can ruin the lives of women and their families.
